Jersey Boat Show 2010 pulls in the Crowds

The third annual Jersey Boat Show, in association with Barclays Wealth, has attracted thousands of Islanders to the Port of Jersey for the festival weekend, with marine traders reporting buoyant and strong sales.

Bob Gallichan, Managing Director of Gallichan Marine, was one of the local exhibitors: “I am delighted with the show particularly as even by Saturday we had sold a number of boats. The show had a lovely atmosphere with plenty of visitors and the organisation behind it was very good indeed. Marine life is so much a part of the Island and the Boat Show is a great celebration of this and a fantastic promotional event.”

Over the three days, visitors flooded down to the marinas to visit boats, sample seafood and Genuine Jersey delights in the fisherman’s village, and lap up the maritime atmosphere.

UK ‘Windy’ sales representative, Ben Toogood, brought boats over specifically for the Jersey Boat Show, “We are very pleased to have come over for the show. Everyone here in Jersey has been very helpful and it has all been incredibly well put together. We have enjoyed the good atmosphere and it really has been a very positive experience for us.”

Attractions were busy, with families enjoying the chance to experience a taste of life at sea, treading the decks of a vast variety of working boats moored at the special ‘Condor Get on Board’ pontoons. The Royal Navy’s 79-metre Fisheries Protection vessel, HMS Mersey; the tall ship, Lord Nelson; the Port of Jersey tug, Duke of Normandy and two of the Navy’s training vessels, HMS Tracker and Trumpeter, all lowered their gang planks for the weekend.

Boats of all shapes and sizes lined the pontoons for those who wanted to gaze and dream of the sea, while staying ashore. Visitors also enjoyed a varied and colourful array of more than 120 exhibitors.

Linzi Wilson, co-director of the Grass Roots Eco Festival, was there to promote the event: “We chose this weekend to do our early bird launch for the festival and it has been really successful. We’ve been really happy with the amounts of people who’ve come down specifically to buy our tickets. It’s the first time we’ve been at the boat show independently and we will definitely be back next year.”

Live entertainment added to the continental atmosphere throughout the festival weekend with many top musicians, including the incredibly popular world famous Beat Retreat performed by the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. The band also joined young musicians from Jersey in a Gala Concert at Jersey’s Opera House for a sell out, unique and entertaining show.

The Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Senator Paul Routier, said: “The Jersey Boat Show in association with Barclays Wealth has been a resounding economic success with important positive benefits for local marine traders and many smaller maritime businesses. It is particularly significant that the Port of Jersey has been able to hold such a successful event in the Island, given that the world is still recovering from the disruption to our airways and there is such an international focus on transport and travel, once again reminding us that the Port of Jersey really is the Island’s lifeline. It is a credit to everyone that we have been able to demonstrate that our maritime environment and the Port of Jersey have been able to continue with such a major event, despite the incredible increase in workload and pressure on the whole Port and Marinas team in recent days, in the run up to the show.”

‘Youth’ was the theme of this year’s Jersey Boat’s Show, with the focus carrying through all the elements the event, aiming to introduce as many young Islanders as possible to the opportunities of a life at sea with representatives from the Royal and Merchant Navies, the fishing industry, the yachting world and voluntary and charitable maritime services.

Commercial Director Myra Shacklady said: “The show was also an opportunity to educate everyone on how to enjoy our wonderful marine environment, safely and responsibly. With this in mind, it was fantastic to welcome so many representatives from such a wide variety of organisations, including local Royal Navy youth and cadet organisations, Island sailing and yacht clubs and local businesses. The show is now hugely popular with Islanders and I think its success is based on the fact that it is a free event for all the family, appealing to all generations and everyone whether an experienced mariner or not. All our traders, from the luxury to the smaller end of the market, have reported good business, reflecting the real range of opportunity in the maritime world. It really is a fantastic showcase for the marine industry, which brings significant benefits for tourism, trade and the Island as a whole.”

Barclays Wealth was delighted to be lead sponsor for the 2010 Jersey Boat Show: “The event was a great success and was attended by many local families and individuals in addition to scores of visitors. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank both the team from Harbours and Barclays Wealth for putting on such a great event which we should all be very proud of,” said Richard Corrigan, Director, Barclays Wealth, Jersey.

The Jersey Boat Show also helped tourism, with an increased number of visiting yachts from the UK and France arriving for the show.

The show was opened by Jersey’s TV chef, Shaun Rankin and powerboat champion Shelley Jory.

April 2010
First Chance to See New Botnia Targa 35.

Wessex Marine will be exhibiting a Botnia Targa at the Jersey Boat Show for the first time this year. Targa has earned its reputation as THE “4 x 4 of the Sea” with legendary sea-going performance, practicality and of course the very best in high quality Scandinavian boatbuilding.

Since it’s introduction 16 years ago, Targa has become a well respected boat across the UK and Ireland and has proved especially popular amongst the Channel Islands, with the concept being ideally suited to local waters. Targa has a great following in the Islands so Wessex are delighted to be exhibiting at the Jersey show for the first time.

On display will be the very latest model of Targa 35. The T35 has proved to be one of the most desirable models of recent years and this boat will be the new 2010 version with a number of clever updates and features. Many will now be familiar with the Targa format but this T35 is the first in the UK with the re-designed interior layout including larger fwd cabin and aft

ensuite heads.

Jersey Boat Show will be the first chance to see this boat before it then continues to the

Seawork exhibition in June and then on to the Southampton International Boat Show in

September.

A Flavour of the Show

The Jersey Boat Show, in association with Barclays Wealth, is a great opportunity to get a real flavour of the sea.

Taking place on 1 - 3 May, in and around St Helier marina, the Show will tantalise taste buds with the fishy sights and smells of the new Fisherman’s Village. Famous, genuine Jersey produce will be on offer and there’s even a chance to go oriental with a new sushi bar.

To get a taste of life on the ocean waves visitors can head to the “Condor Get on Board” pontoons with a wide variety of boats to clamber aboard - the 79 metre Fisheries Protection vessel, HMS Mersey; the Tall Ship, Lord Nelson; the Port of Jersey tug, Duke of Normandy and two of the Navy’s training vessels, HMS Tracker and Trumpeter.

For a peek at life under the waves a new feature of the Show offers the chance to ‘Try a Dive’, with Dive Jersey and Florida Pools.

For a musical taste of the sea visitors will be treated to the world famous Beat Retreat by the Band of her Majesty’s Royal Marines. The band will also be joining young musicians from Jersey in a Gala Concert at Jersey’s Opera House.

For those looking to continue to savour the pleasures of boating the marina will be a floating showroom of boats, both power and sail. On the land visitors will find a unique marine shopping experience.

‘Barclays Wealth is delighted to be lead sponsor for the 2010 Jersey Boat Show. This event has quickly become a key date on the Jersey calendar and offers visitors a great opportunity to find out more about Jersey’s marine industry,’ said Richard Corrigan, Director of Barclays Wealth in Jersey.

‘As a leading provider of financial services within Jersey, we are keen to help celebrate and support the local community. Our sponsorship of the 2010 Jersey Boat Show complements other activities such as the annual Barclays Wealth Community Awards and the Barclays Wealth Late Night Football League.’

Opening the Show will be Jersey’s TV chef, Shaun Rankin and powerboat champion Shelley Jory. Rumour has it that Shaun will be teaching Shelley how to cook at the Show, but will Shelley get Shaun out in a powerboat?

Commercial Director, Myra Shacklady said: “The event is shaping up well and our team are very busy behind the scenes, making sure that all is set for our third Jersey Boat Show. Things are particularly hectic here at the moment as the vital lifeline role our harbour and ports play throughout the year has been critically highlighted by the unfortunate events over the last few days. As an Island we are even more reliant on our seaways than most and it is perhaps only at times like this that Islanders can really appreciate how vital our operation at Jersey Harbours is. We hope that by the time our Boat Show opens during the May Bank Holiday people will able to focus their attention on boat’s and our maritime environment in a positive and enjoyable way. We are looking forward to an exciting festival weekend, which is of course free for all locals and visitors.”

Is it a Bird...is it a Plane...

Final preparations for the forthcoming Jersey Boat Show in association with Barclays Wealth are well underway and as part of the promotional campaign to raise awareness of the event, organisers have taken the unusual step of installing a 44 foot (13.68metres) boat at Jersey Airport.

Although it may appear an unusual venue to promote a maritime event, according to Jersey Harbours Commercial Director, Myra Shacklady the Airport is the ideal location. She explained, “The Jersey Boat Show attracts thousands of visitors over the three-days, many of whom are holidaying in Jersey at the time. What better way of promoting this event to them as well as local residents, many of whom travel frequently than by installing a boat at the principal gateway to the Island”.

Jersey Airport’s Terminal & Security Manager, Steve Read agrees. He said, “The boat will certainly be a talking point amongst passengers and staff at the airport and if it helps to raise awareness of the Jersey Boat Show to potential visitors we are more than happy to accommodate it here”.

The Fairline Targa 44 has been generously supplied by local company Offshore Nautical Group who are the islands suppliers of Fairline, Glastron, Rodman and Bayliner. She measures 44ft (13.68 meters) overall, 13ft 3in (4.04m) wide and weighs in at almost 12 tons (11,300kg).

Now in its third year the Jersey Boat Show, in association with Barclays Wealth, combines an exciting marine market place with a lively maritime festival, all free for locals and Island visitors.

Once again the Royal Navy will take centre stage. This year their presence will include the impressive Fisheries Protection vessel, HMS Mersey, a number of Navy training vessels, both power and sail, and the world-beating Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. The band will be performing an unmissable Beat Retreat ceremony during the Show.

All shapes and sizes of boats will be on display and for sale at the show. The marina will feature a fascinating mix of aspirational and practical power boats and sailing yachts. Whilst on the land visitors will find smaller boats and a host of equipment and accessories.

For those who just want to dream and catch the festival atmosphere there’ll be food aplenty, live stage entertainment and activities, both on and off the water.

The boat will be located at Jersey Airport up to and throughout the Jersey Boat Show, which takes place over the Bank Holiday Weekend of 1 – 3 May 2010.

March 2010
Royal Navy Sail in for 2010 Boat Show

The water-based Guest of Honour at this year’s Jersey Boat Show will be the 79 metre River Class Offshore Patrol Vessel, HMS Mersey.

The impressive 1,677-tonne Royal Navy ship was built in Southampton and is deployed primarily for the vital job of Fisheries Protection. She can, however, be adapted readily for other duties. HMS Mersey features a large working cargo deck that allows her to be equipped with specific facilities for a particular role, such as disaster relief, anti-pollution, fire fighting, rescue work or the interception of other vessels. She also has capacity to embark a section of fleet protection Royal Marines if required.

HMS Mersey’s crew should feel at home at the Jersey Boat Show. One of their tasks last year was to escort the youngest yachtsman to sail around the world into Falmouth after he crossed the finish line. Seventeen year old Mike Perham was delighted to see the ship waiting for him in at the end of his long voyage.

“Lieutenant Commander Carl Wiseman said: “It is a pleasure to be associated with the Jersey Boat Show and my officers and crew are all looking forward to giving the people of Jersey, and other visitors, a warm and traditional welcome on board when the ship is open to visit.

“The Royal Navy has always enjoyed visiting Jersey and has great historical links with the island, the Fishery Protection Vessels in particular.

During her time alongside, we will be presented with the Jersey Cup, which is awarded to the fishery patrol ship that has proved to be the most efficient and effective over the past year and I can think of no better time and place to receive this award.”

HMS Mersey will be open to the public during all three days of the Show when visitors can learn about today’s modern Royal Navy, in particular the role of the Fishery Protection Squadron which is the oldest front line squadron in the Royal Navy.

Jersey’s Harbour Master, Howard Le Cornu said, “Last year, HMS York, proved to be one of the star attractions with Islanders, so we are thrilled that the Royal Navy have agreed to attend our Boat Show once again. It is a mark of Jersey Boat Show’s significance and prestige in the European maritime calendar that we will once again have a Royal Naval presence. I hope the Island public will enjoy the opportunity of visiting her as part of their Boat Show experience.”

The Royal Navy will take centre stage at the Show as their presence will also include HMS Tracker and HMS Trumpeter, which play a pivotal role in the Bristol and Oxford University Royal Navy Units, plus other training vessels, both power and sail. The world-renowned Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines will also be performing two rousing Beat Retreat ceremonies during the Show.

Jersey Boat Show will take place on the May Bank Holiday, 1-3 May. Now in its third year it combines an exciting marine market place with a lively maritime festival, all free for locals and Island visitors.

All shapes and sizes of boats will be on display and for sale at the Jersey Boat Show.

March 2010
Big Band First for the Boat Show

Top young Jersey Musicians will have the chance to play alongside the world famous Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines when they perform at Jersey Opera House for the first time as part of Jersey Harbour’s Boat Show celebrations this May.

The theme of the Jersey Boat Show this year is ‘youth’ and up to two hundred children, ranging in ages from 10 to 18, from schools right across the Island will take part in a special workshop day at the Jersey Instrumental Services (JIS) rehearsal rooms organised as part of the event. Young Island musicians from the JIS Training Wind Band, JIS Intermediate Wind Band and Jersey Youth Wind Band will take part. After the workshops, around 30 talented youngsters will be selected to join the military big band to play two or three pieces of music on the Gala night at the Opera House on Sunday 2nd May.

The Head of Jersey’s Instrumental Musician Service, Neil Courtney, said: “This is a unique experience for our youngsters to benefit from expert guidance from some of the World’s best military musicians. It will be an incredible opportunity for those selected to join such a prestigious band on stage and we are thrilled that the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines have taken this opportunity to come to Jersey. “

Jersey Harbours are paying any costs for the concert, but money raised from ticket sales will be donated to the Royal Naval Royal Marine Charity and the Jersey Variety Sailing Trust, the chosen charity of Jersey Harbours.

Jersey Harbours Commercial Director, Myra Shacklady said: “The Jersey Boat Show has grown to become a significant event in the Island’s spring time calendar, enjoyed by thousands of visitors and locals. This year our special theme is ‘youth’ and this will be carried through all the elements of the show with the aim of introducing as many young Islanders as possible to the opportunities of a life at sea. This is the first time that we have decided to put on a Charity Gala Concert during the boat show weekend and we are really honoured that the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines

will star. It is extremely fitting, given our ‘youth’ theme, that some of our talented Island young musicians will be able to join them on stage for what promises to be a very special night. “

The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines have visited Jersey in the past to perform a series of Beat Retreats, but this is the first time that they will perform a concert in the Jersey Opera House. Captain Craig Burns is their Director of Music:

“We will performing a traditional Military Band concert repertoire with a fanfare to open, a March sequence with the Corps of Drums demonstrating their skill and dexterity with drum beatings. We will also include virtuoso solo performances from individual members of the band and of course some of the traditional and well loved ‘Big Band’ sound, wrapping up with a finale including the Sunset ceremony. Of course it will be wonderful to be on stage with some of Jersey’s best local young musicians and we are very pleased to be over in the Island to support Jersey Harbour’s splendid Boat Show weekend. We will try to make such an impact with our concert that we might be invited back and can perhaps make it a regular event!”

The Boat Show will take place over the May Bank Holiday weekend from 1st to 3rd May and Jersey Harbours want to build on the success of the previous two years. Jersey has a long maritime heritage which has been reflected by the attendance at past events of thousands of Islanders - and visitors - who have enjoyed a huge variety of maritime attractions, including experiencing life on board the Royal Navy vessel, HMS York, which last year proved to be the star attraction.

Boat Show Launched on HMS WALNEY

‘Youth’ will be the theme of the third annual Jersey Boat Show next year, which organizers are announcing as taking place on the 1st – 4th May 2010.

The Show will be officially launched on board the Royal Navy mine hunter, HMS Walney when she is brought into St. Helier Harbour by her Commanding Officer, Old Victorian, Lieutenant Commander Marcus Jacques,

“As part of the visit I am very proud to be able to launch the 2010 Jersey Boat Show with the focus being on youth organizations. Throughout my formative years the sea has played a significant role in my life.

From the surf at St Ouen to messing about in boats at the Royal Channel Island Yacht Club with Victoria College, I have had one of the best initiations I could have ever wished for and I hope my visit will inspire more to follow.”

Lieutenant Commander Marcus Jacques will welcome the Chief Minister and Jersey Harbours Chief Executive Officer, Howard Le Cornu on board for the formal announcement. Guests from the Royal Navy, show exhibitors and members of Island youth groups will also be onboard to mark the launch of the 2010 Jersey Boat Show.

Representatives from across the local Royal Navy youth and cadet organisations will also be invited to join the crew on the Naval Mine Hunter to celebrate the special focus on ‘youth’ for next year’s show.

Speaking at the event, Mr Le Cornu said: “We are delighted to formally announce the dates for the 2010 Jersey Boat Show. The past two years have proved a resounding success for the show and we are building on that success each year. We are particularly thrilled that the Royal Navy has come over to Jersey with the sole aim of helping us to launch the event. It is a mark of the growing significance of the Jersey Boat Show in the boating calendar to have such a prestigious presence here in the Island today.”

The 2010 event will take place at the start of the boating season, over the Bank Holiday weekend, 1,2 and 3 May.

The three-day Show will take place in the maritime heart of St Helier featuring power, sail and water sports, along with local food produce, craft, music and family activities.

Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Senator Paul Routier, said: “ We are very proud to have the Royal Navy here to launch our 2010 Boat Show. Last year HMS York attended the show and was one of the most popular attractions and we would be absolutely delighted to see a Royal Naval vessel join us for the 2010 Boat Show next May.

The Jersey Boat Show is now firmly established as an event in the Jersey calendar which brings significant benefits for tourism, trade and the Island as a whole. The show has also been a platform for Jersey to develop its international reputation and we hope that 2010 will continue to build on the strong foundations of the previous two boat shows.”

Last year’s show was considered a huge success after thousands of Islanders attended to look around HMS York; the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s tall ship Lord Nelson; and more than 80 boats of all sizes. In addition to the main attractions, visitors enjoyed more than 80 exhibitors, and entertainment, with all the main attractions full to capacity and stall holders reporting significant trade.

May 2009
Second Annual Jersey Boat Show Attracts Thousands

The 2009 Jersey Boat Show has been a huge success, with all the main attractions full to capacity and stall holders reporting significant trade.

Over the three days, thousands of people have looked around the Royal Navy’s HMS York; the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s tall ship Lord Nelson; and more than 80 boats of all sizes on the pontoon. In addition to the main attractions, visitors enjoyed more than 80 exhibitors, and entertainment throughout the festival weekend from a wide variety of musicians and entertainers.

Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Senator Paul Routier, said: “This has been a fantastic showcase for the marine industry, as well as a brilliant event for Islanders and island visitors. I believe that the Jersey Boat Show is now truly established as an event in the Jersey calendar which brings significant benefits for tourism, trade and the Island as a whole. The show has also been a platform for Jersey to develop its international reputation. From the Chief Minister down, Islanders have forged stronger links with the Royal Navy, and with the UK and France.”

The Jersey Boat Show also helped tourism, with an increased number of visiting yachts from the UK and France arriving for the show.

Jersey Harbours’ Chief Executive, Howard Le Cornu, said: “Last year’s inaugural boat show was very successful, but I think that this year we have stepped up to a new level. We have made it a more diverse show – a bigger window on the marine world. Everyone came for a fun day out, but I think that many visitors also realised how much there is to do in marine leisure.

“The 80 traders who had stalls are saying that they have had a lot of business, which I think reflects the nature of the show: people have enjoyed looking around the multi-million pound yachts which they can dream of owning, but against that backdrop there were also the smaller vessels which many more people could afford, and business was good at every level.

“The live entertainment has significantly enhanced the whole show’s ambience, which visitors have really enjoyed. For safety reasons we limited the number of people allowed on to HMS York, the pontoon and Lord Nelson, but thousands of people visited them every day, and they all enjoyed the experience. Even at this early stage, I am confident in saying that this has been a fantastic festival.”

Jersey Boat Show to host St Helier’s Sea Sunday Service

Jersey Boat Show is to host a “Sea Sunday” Service. This special act of worship will take place at 10am on Sunday 3 May.

It will be the first Sea Sunday Service to be held in the Parish of St Helier and will take place adjacent to the Maritime museum, at the heart of the Show.

Led by the Dean of Jersey it will be attended by the Constable of St Helier and his officers, representatives of the Royal Navy and members of the congregation of the parish of St Helier. A warm welcome is also offered to members of the public and Show visitors.

Following the service the Dean will visit the marina pontoons to bless individual boats and their owners.

A number of the parishes of Jersey have long held Sea Sunday services which celebrate Jersey’s maritime heritage and ask God to watch over those people who make a living working at sea.

Jersey Harbours Chief Executive Howard Le Cornu said “The Boat Show is held at the start of the boating season and I am particularly delighted to invite the St Helier boat owners to attend the service and to have the opportunity to receive a blessing from the Dean as they prepare their boats to go to sea again”.

Note:

Boat owners wishing to be included in the blessing should contact the Show organiser, Sara Felton.

Should the “heavens open” prior to the service it will be held at the Town Church, adjacent to the Royal Square in St Helier.

Armor Boats Range 39 launched at the Jersey Boat Show.

A new design of powerboat cruiser is on show for the first time at the Jersey Boat Show. The Range Boat combines the design skills of British designer Nigel Irens with high quality advanced manufacturing technology from French boat builder Armor Boats.

The 12 metre Range Boat has a long waterline length, and is much lighter than most boats of this length. This unusual configuration creates a hull shape that is highly energy efficient, enabling the Range Boat to smoothly achieve remarkable speeds without the need to get on the plane. This avoids the uncomfortable slamming and often bumpy ride characteristic of planing hulls, and gives a satisfying feeling of slippery and effortless speed. Iren’s non-planing Low Displacement to Length (LDL) concept also allows the boat to be operated at optimum speed to suit the sea state unlike a planing hull which becomes uncomfortable and inefficient when forced by adverse sea-state to travel at sub-planing speeds.

Armor Boats 12 metre Range Boat is 3.3 metre wide, with a 0.9 metre draft. It is designed to seat eight adults in comfort, with a covered front cabin and navigation cockpit. The low profile design means passengers and crew do not experience the nausea-inducing rolling common on taller, shorter and wider powerboats.

With Nigel Irens’ proven design record – which includes the world record breaking power trimaran ‘Cable & Wireless Adventurer’ – the Range Boat’s design ensures good sea-keeping characteristics with a much enhanced passage-making capability in any sea state.

Designed as a day boat or with longer distance cruising boat, there is the option to fit an extended awning to provide protection for the aft seating area. Able to sleep up to four people, the front cabin includes a double berth, sink, shower and heads. The aft decking lounge area features padded bench seating which converts into a double bed, galley with cooker, sink, icemaker and refrigerator; and combined steering and navigation area.

The diesel engine options include a single 100 hp unit designed to attain the optimum cruising speed of 13-15 knots, whereas a single 200 hp installation is required to achieve a maximum speed of 20 knots. Fuel consumption is 13 litres per hour, at average speeds of 13 knots, and seven litres per hour at speeds of around 10 knots.

Based in Northern Brittany. Armor Boats uses the latest epoxy resin-infusion moulding techniques to create a sandwich hull and deck which ensures an almost perfect saturation of the laminate. The components are epoxy resin bonded and the interior is constructed in marine ply which again are all epoxy resin bonded. The Range Boat is available in two options – the Range 39 Day Boat and Range 39 Cruiser – and prices start at Euros 220,000 for the Day Boat, and Euros 230,000 for the Range 39 Cruiser.

Armor Boats will be showing the Range Boat at the Jersey Boat Show from 2-4 May 2009. For more information contact Jean-Pierre Tabu, Armor Boats, Tel +33 (0)2 96 91 03 32 or mob +33 (0)6 11 14 67 20 or by email at jptabu@rangeboat.com

A Real Flavour of the Sea!

This year’s Jersey Boat Show will give visitors a real flavour of the sea. Held in St Helier Marina it will feature unusual boats, hands-on action, great entertainment, a range of shopping temptations and a fantastic atmosphere.

Jersey Harbours Chief Executive, Howard Le Cornu, said: “This year’s boat show truly will be a celebration of the sea and an event for everyone. It marks the launch of the summer boating season for us and it will be an incredible showcase for our local marine traders with everything from kayaks to the luxury motorboat. Jersey Harbours are committed to doing whatever they can to support the future of the local marine economy and the local community. The Jersey Boatshow is an enjoyable way of reminding islanders of the varied and important lifeline role our Marinas, Ports and Harbours play in island life.”

Visitors will find plenty to see on the water. In addition to the Royal Navy’s HMS YORK, which will be alongside at Elizabeth Harbour, the Jubilee Sailing Trust will be berthing one of their Tall Ships in the Marina. Highlights of Lord Nelson’s visit include a charity mast climb, flag design competition for local schools and plenty of time for the public to get on board.

Visitors can also get up close to a racing powerboat and enjoy a chat with the crew. Team Fox will be showing off their impressive 150hp Honda race boat. The local team will be racing it in the prestigious Honda Formula 4Stroke race series and it will proudly bear the name of the Port of Jersey.

Liam McDermott from Fox Marine Services said, “It is the first time we have taken part in this event and our team are thrilled to be representing Jersey, with the support of Jersey Harbours. Our first race takes place the weekend after the Jersey Boat Show, so the show will be a fantastic opportunity for islanders to meet our local team, Martin Colligan and Gideon Du Val, and see the racing boat close up, just days before she heads off to compete! We are looking forward to their support!”

Those who prefer something more traditional can get “hands on” by helping to build a wooden boat. As well as providing advice on the craft of boat building Jersey Heritage will also help visitors delve into Jersey’s fascinating history with maritime walks. Royal Navy “proud to be supporting the Jersey Boat show".

Jersey Harbours, organisers of the Jersey Boat Show, are delighted to confirm that the Royal Navy will have a significant presence in direct support of this year’s Show which runs from 2-4 May.

Thanks to some excellent liaison between the Royal Navy (the ‘Senior Service’) and The States of Jersey, and with enormous help and co-operation from the Port of Jersey and Condor Ferries, HMS YORK, will actually be berthed alongside for the duration of the Show.

Assistant Minister Senator Paul Routier comments “I am delighted by the team work and cooperation of all port users who have worked together to make the visit of HMS YORK possible, berthing the ship alongside will provide visitors to the Jersey Boat Show the chance to get onboard this magnificent ship.”

For the first time a Type 42 destroyer will enter the Elizabeth Harbour East Berth allowing easy access to the Ship for Show visitors and invited guests.

HMS YORK was the last of the Type 42 destroyers to be built for the Royal Navy. Launched in 1982 and accepted into service in March 1985, she is the twelfth ship in the Royal Navy to bear the name. The Ship's motto 'Bon Espoir' means Good Hope and was the motto of Edmund Langley, the First Duke of York 1341-1402, who was the fifth son of Edward III.

Visitors to the Jersey Boat Show can obtain free invitations to tour the ship from the Royal Navy stand at the Show. The tours will operate on a first come first served basis.

Commander Price, Commanding Officer says “HMS YORK is pleased to be able to support the Jersey Boat Show. This is the Ship's first port visit since a multi-million pound refit and we are looking forward to showcasing our capabilities and of course, meeting the good people of Jersey”.

Jersey Boat Show heralded a success!

The first ever Jersey Boat Show has been heralded a success by visitors, exhibitors and the organisers.

Early indications suggest that millions of pounds-worth of new boats were sold during the three-day event, which attracted an estimated 12,000 Islanders and tourists.

Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Deputy Alan Maclean, said: “Not only have we put on a maritime festival that has provided entertainment for Islanders and visitors, but it has also been hugely successful in promoting the significant opportunities offered by our marine leisure industry.

“There are strong indications from exhibitors that the show will result in several million pounds worth of sales varying from small dinghies to large high-value yachts. Jersey Harbours has been able to find additional berths as required and from a business perspective the show is part of a continuing relationship between Jersey Harbours and the many firms involved in the marine industry.”

More than 7,500 visitors went on to the pontoons, where they were able to climb onboard the 57 yachts on display. In addition, many more thronged around the varied exhibition stands and food outlets. Children and families also enjoyed the nautical treasure hunts and story telling.

Initial findings from visitor surveys conducted over the three days reported a “fantastic atmosphere” and a “great chance to actually get on board boats” rather than seeing them from a distance.

The findings also suggest that many visitors came to Jersey as a direct result of the show.

Martin Bralsford, Chairman of the event sponsors Collins Stewart Wealth Management, said: “We also sponsor the London Boat Show and, even measured against that high benchmark, Jersey Boat Show has been an undoubted success. This is made all the more remarkable in view of the short lead time in which the show has been organised. To have attracted one in six Islanders over three days is a huge achievement, and we are already looking forward to talking to Jersey Harbours about next year’s event.”

Senator Frank Walker said: “The show has been a triumph for all concerned. It has exceeded all expectations and is a great tribute to the work that the Harbours team – with its trade partners – have put into conceiving and delivering such an event. It must surely now be a launch pad for further shows and a significant step forward for Jersey’s marine leisure industry.”

As the crowds made their way onto the pontoons children from Janvrin Primary School entertained them with big smiles and some great nautical songs.

The Royal Navy frigate, HMS Kent is to visit Jersey during the Jersey Boat Show. The Class 23 frigate will arrive in Island waters on Friday 2nd May and will stay until Monday 5th.

HMS Kent was commissioned in 2000 June and is the latest in a long line of warships that have carried the name, which dates back to the 17th Century. Over its distinguished history, HMS Kent has earned 16 battle honours and served in a variety of campaigns.

During its time in Jersey, the ship’s crew and officers will come ashore and take part in the boat show, helping with some of the safety provisions on the water and providing other supporting activities. Waterbuoy - as seen on BBC's Dragon's Den

Oh buoy! Never lose anything overboard again

Seatriever International launches Waterbuoy, the first product in a family of automatic floatation devices that will recover your mobile phone, keys, GPS receiver, PDA, binoculars, VHF radio or anything else that drops overboard

Waterbuoy is a must-have safety device for anything portable on your boat. It may only be the same size as a regular car key fob, but Waterbuoy packs some ingenious miniature flotation technology to stop that sinking feeling in its tracks. When dropped into the water, Waterbuoy becomes a flashing emergency float for whatever it is attached to, making it possible to retrieve just about anything that you accidentally drop into the water.

Just because it has been dropped over the side does not mean that it’s lost. Before you even have time to worry about all the contacts in your mobile phone or how you are going to get home tonight, with your car-keys and house-keys at the bottom of the sea, Waterbuoy will spring into action.

“Waterbuoy is a unique product. It will lift up to 1kg back to the surface, it will stay afloat for at least 24 hours and it has an emergency flashing light that makes it visible from up to 250 metres away in the dark, so you can even get your valuables back at night,” explains James Halliburton, CEO of Seatriever International. “Waterbuoy is the world’s first and only high-tech solution to the most infuriating accident that can happen on the water.”

Waterbuoy’s operation is ingenious. Seconds after falling into the sea, canal, marina, lake or river, water passes into the body of the fob dissolving a patented automatic actuator that releases gas from a tiny tank into a bright orange balloon. The balloon breaks out of the end of the fob and continues to inflate. Simultaneously, a bright LED starts flashing which illuminates Waterbuoy from the inside like a Belisha beacon. The toughened balloon inflates to the size of a melon making it very easy to grab one-handed or retrieve with a boathook without fear of it bursting.

Waterbuoy is the result of two years of intensive engineering development that has led to the patenting of some very clever new technology.

Seatriever is currently using this technology to scale the concept into a multitude of new markets and applications. So look out for more and more Waterbuoy-branded devices helping to save all kinds of objects you’d rather not send to a watery grave.

Dominic Zonta of Channel Island Boat Maintenance is the sole distributor of Waterbuoy in the Channel Islands if you would like further information please contact him at cibm@jerseymail.co.uk

Jersey Boat Show announced

Inaugural Jersey Boat Show to showcase the best of the Island's marine leisure industry. Jersey is to stage its first Boat Show over the Bank Holiday Weekend of 3-5 May 2008.

The three-day event will be held in and around St Helier Marina and will provide Islanders and visitors alike with the opportunity to view a variety of craft, ranging from luxurious superyachts to family cruisers and dayboats. Jersey Boat Show 08 is being underwritten by Jersey Harbours in partnership with Collins Stewart Wealth Management.

As well as dozens of craft on the water, the show will feature a number of landside exhibits, entertainment and displays along the New North Quay and Albert Pier. It promises to offer something for everyone, from experienced sailors looking for a new boat or equipment to boating novices wanting to find out more.

Among the many craft on display will be a brand new locally-built 13-metre RIB (rigid inflatable boat) powered by four 300HP Suzuki outboards, which will be receiving its world debut at the show.

The newly-restored 'Howard D', Jersey's first motorised lifeboat, will also be on show. It is hoped its appearance will raise the profile of the St Helier Lifeboat Appeal – over the weekend Jersey Boat Show 08 will be helping to raise funds for the £1.3m appeal.

Jersey Boat Show 08 is being launched as part of Jersey Harbour's on-going commitment to promote the growth of the Island's marine leisure industry and their developing partnership with Economic Development, Jersey Tourism and marine traders.

London Boat Show 2008s title sponsor Collins Stewart joins Jersey Harbours as the principal partner of the event, bringing together the Island's marine and financial communities.

The wealth management experts, who have the largest investment team based in the Channel Islands, see this association with the Jersey Boat Show as a natural development of their existing activities.

Chairman of Collins Stewart Wealth Management's offshore business, Martin Bralsford said: "We have been involved with the London Boat Show for two years and are proud to support a local equivalent. We look forward to working closely with the team at Jersey Harbours to ensure this inaugural event is the first of many more to come."
